WIP Apartment
Work in Progress Apartment is a conversion of a former office space into a private residence in Athens’ vibrant, chaotic Exarchia neighbourhood, known for its creativity, and resilience. The design reflects the area’s spirit of flux and authenticity, with a minimalist industrial aesthetic, celebrating moments of imperfection.
A partial demolition of the original ceiling plaster at the entrance, a remnant of the building’s history, symbolises the connection between past and present, creating a suspension of time: Is this fragment part of demolition works, or is it still work in progress?
The material palette honours the building’s history, existing battered plaster and pink marble flooring are preserved, while new elements, such as custom wardrobes, maintain a cohesive aesthetic. Reclaimed materials are repurposed into a family of bespoke wall lights. Industrial elements define the kitchen and bathroom.
The layout preserves the open, airy feel of the original office, incorporating large spaces for music and theatre rehearsals, in line with the owner’s artistic profession. The design minimises the footprint of all functional areas such as kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, avoiding fixed furniture all together. A focal point, the timber ‘capsule’, contains the bedroom, storage, kitchen cabinetry, and wardrobe, sitting at the heart of the layout, separating, yet unifying the adjacent rooms.
Ultimately, the project explores the spirit of transformation and openness. WIP apartment remains a testament to the beauty found in imperfection and the narrative of place. It invites us, in a playful way, to reconsider our perceptions of home, space, and identity.
