STOFF/WECHSEL

A Critical Look at Fast Fashion. A Call for Conscious Consumption.

The show STOFF/WECHSEL is based on the exhibition CRITICAL CONSUMPTION from the MAK–Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna) and has been adapted and expanded by the Frauenmuseum Hittisau.

How are consumption and sustainability, fashion and gender interconnected? Who makes our clothes, and under what conditions are they produced? The exhibition serves as a platform to explore these complex interconnections. It takes a critical, feminist perspective on fast fashion and highlights the links between consumer behavior and the exploitation of women worldwide. Art and culture offer the opportunity to address topics such as sustainability, consumption, and gender, thereby raising awareness for positive change.

Our exhibition design incorporates reusable, and recyclable materials. Stacked cardboard boxes are arranged in a rectangular layout, forming the core structure as display surface and recessed vitrines. A bold pink curtain shields the artwork from direct daylight, creating a "room within a room" for visitors to engage with the main body of work. Strapping ropes suspend showcases, adding an industrial edge, while packaging tape secures the boxes, referencing delivery packaging and fast fashion. Interactive elements for all ages are a key part of the experience, providing visitors with the opportunity to feel various fabrics and learn surprising facts about their origin and composition.
